French Leaders My Way (As seen in Trout Fisherman Dec 2012)
French Leaders My Way (As seen in Trout Fisherman Dec 2012)

These are the leaders that I use in the trout fisherman magazine, Daiwa shock leaders. You can buy them on a spool and make them up yourself or you can buy them from me all made up and ready to go. I will Pre-Stretched and boil them, attach and check the indicator end and also attach a small black nickel leader ring for ease of attaching your flies.

The leaders come in two colours Fl.Orange or Clear, with the same Indicator tip on both leaders, they are 13m long and with the indicator on them takes them up to approx 14m. Trim them if you wish from the reel end, but in my opinion why bother as you can’t add length back onto them, so I say leave them as is, because you can use all the 13m when fishing to reach those hard to reach streams and with control.

These leaders should last you anything up to a year and when its starts to get cranky and twisted, just pop them into a wash basin and pour a kettle of boiling water on them, leave them for 10-15 mins then stretch them between 2 points, ie garden fences for an hour or two and they are back to almost new.

The Clear one is very handy for spooky fish and crystal clear waters, but remember when its starts to get dark it willbe harder to see.

The Orange one has great all round visuals, and my favourite for most occasions, I have been using these for some 4 years or longer now and they still work great.

Fulling Mill Tapered Leaders (Dry Fly)
Fulling Mill Tapered Leaders (Dry Fly)

These are the leaders I use on the river when Dry Fly Fishing.

Attached to the end I will add 3' of Jaxon Eternum 0.12mm (Up to 3 Kilo). They have never let me down they turn over well and are very good value for money.

Top Tip

Grease the whole leader to allow better lift off, and degrease the added peice of nylon at the end, last 1-2'

Also when the leader is old and curled up, cut it to about 5' in length and use it fish the Duo/Trio methods. Allowing you to attach your expensive Sighter klink to a very strong piece of nylon, then at least you will only loose the nymphs when fishing and hanked up on the bottom.

 Jaxon - Premiun Eternum - 150m Spools

This is what I use on the rivers at home and abroad. It rarely lets me down. The thickness to strength ratio is like nothing else I have ever used. I have landed brown trout over 5lb on the River Clyde using the Up to 3 Kilo (0.12mm)

0.10mm - Fish up to 2kilo (4.4lb) - Neil Sinclair (Double Decker) Dry fly master loves this for his Dries

0.12mm - Fish up to 3kilo (6.6lb) - I use this for dries down to size 22's

0.14mm - Fish up to 4kilo (8.8lb) - I love this for Drys down to size 16's

0.16mm - Fish up to 5kilo (11lb) - My Personal Favourite for Nymphing

0.18mm - Fish up to 6kilo (13.2lb) Stillwater Use

0.20mm - Fish up to 7kilo (15.4lb) Stillwater Use

With 150m on the spool you cant go wrong at this price, imported directly from the manufacturers in Poland, No more expensive transit from Eastern Europe you can get it direct from FlyFishingWorld.

I have not used this that much on the Stillwaters, but Im sure it will be fine in the 6 and 7 kilos sizes.
I DO NOT RECOMMMEND USING THIS ON STILLWATERS DUE TO THE NATURE OF STRONGER RODS, HEAVIER LINES AND MORE SAVAGE TAKES FROM RAINBOWS AND BROWNS IN THE LOWER SIZES.

Leeda Silicon Dry Fly (Bottle with Brush)
Leeda Silicon Dry Fly (Bottle with Brush)

Another river essential, Neil Sinclair has got me using this more than my usual gink, widely know as Daddy Dry Fly, Neils love for dry fly fishing and how good he is at it is widely known in Scotland and over the borders, hes an artist and a gentleman. He uses this on his flies after every single fish is caught, catch fish, dry fly in patch then re-apply to the fly, his attitude is a dry fly is supposed to be exactly that a DRY FLY.

Comes in a handy bottle with Brush attached to the cap so you can quickly re-fress that fish catchign dry fly and get it on the water for another fish.

Leeda Silicone Mucilin
 Leeda Silicone Mucilin

This stuff is superb for keeping your fly line sitting high in the water on those fast rivers. I use this all the time now and before I start to fish I will treat my fly line and if fishing Dry Fly treat most fo my leader also. This helps with floatability and also helps with lift of when you have to be quick to change direction and cast to a rising fish.

Over a longer periods of time this will crack many fly lines, but I buy cheap floating lines for the river and replace them almost every year, at the end of the day how far do you need to cast on the river? if the lines does its job and normally I pay no more than £10 for my floaters and throw them away at the end of the year.

Excellent product that has stood the test of time and has been around for years and years.

 Stroft GTM 0.70Kilo (1.5Lbs) - 5.1Kilo (11.25lb) 100M Spool

I have been using this mono myself after being introduced to it by Simon Cocker a Scotland World Team member and Internationlist. This nylon is superb and has a very fine diameter and a very high breaking strain for the diameter. I have been using it on the rivers for dries and czech nymph fishing and also find that I get less tangles with it and that is is super strong. My favourite is the 3.6Kilo which is only 0.18 in diameter yet it is 8lb in breaking Strain. I will be using more and more of this in the season coming and using less of the more expensive fluorocarbons. I have not increased my catch rate since moving to fluorocarbon from one of my old favourites nylon's Drennan double strength. I will keep you all posted on my developments with this nylon. German Made and top quality normal RRP is £6.00 per 100m go get yourself a bargain and a top quality product at the same time. I recommend it
